Waste & reuse
Separating building waste: arrange disposal before demolition
Before work starts, establish which materials will be removed, what will be retained and which waste streams will be disposed of separately. The chosen waste processor's acceptance conditions determine what can go into each skip.
A materials overview prevents poor choices
Review the scope of work room by room. A bathroom may contain plaster, metal, glass, plastics and installation components as well as ceramics and masonry. 'Everything is rubble' is therefore not a workable agreement. Have unfamiliar or suspect materials assessed first.
Reuse requires preparation before components are removed. Record which doors, radiators or other elements must remain intact, who retains ownership and where they will be stored. Careful dismantling is different work from disposal as waste.
Discuss these waste streams with the processor
| Material | What needs to be clear beforehand |
|---|---|
| Stone-based material | Which types of clean rubble are accepted, and which contaminants are not? |
| Plaster | Is separate collection required, and how will it be kept separate? |
| Timber | How is treated or contaminated wood classified? |
| Metals | Which elements can be kept separate? |
| Glass and plastic | What composition and packaging does the waste processor accept? |
| Suspect or hazardous material | Obtain an expert assessment first; do not mix it with ordinary construction waste. |
| Items for reuse | Agree on the destination, condition, dismantling, storage and transport. |
Skip capacity is not the same as material volume
Once material is broken up, gaps form between the pieces. Calculating a floor's solid volume does not therefore directly determine the skip size required. Weight, waste type and permitted load can also limit the choice. Have waste removal planned around the actual conditions.
Discuss the distance between the work area and the skip, the route through the building and any transport equipment required. It is not always possible to place a skip directly outside. Check who will make the necessary arrangements for its placement.
Record the handover
When commissioning the work, ask what information will be provided about waste removal and processing. A reuse claim can only be verified if it is clear which material is going to which destination. A general sustainability percentage without supporting evidence tells you little about your project.
Frequently asked questions
Can suspected asbestos-containing material go in a construction waste skip?
Do not mix this with ordinary construction waste. First have it assessed to identify the material and the separate approach required.
Can I start dismantling parts myself?
First discuss what can safely remain and what must be retained. Do not open up or damage unknown materials or interfere with installations to make removal easier.
