One of the more challenging drilling jobs is drilling into concrete. Concrete drilling is hard work because the material is extremely tough, so having the right tools is essential. You can do it yourself, but it must be done correctly. Rushing in without preparation can lead to unpleasant surprises. Below, you will find tips for drilling into a concrete wall yourself, an explanation of what a professional can do for you and an indication of the cost.

Drilling a hole in a concrete wall

Drilling holes in concrete yourself

If you decide to do the work yourself, the information below may help.

Use the right drill

An ordinary cordless drill is not powerful enough. Concrete is a hard material, so you need a special drill. The most suitable drill for concrete is a rotary hammer.

Buy a concrete drill bit

It is very important to use a concrete drill bit for this job. A wood drill bit is unsuitable and will most likely break. A metal drill bit or ordinary masonry drill bit is not suitable either. The tip of a concrete drill bit is made from extra-hard material, which makes drilling into concrete possible. A useful tip: when you need a larger hole, first drill a smaller one, then enlarge it using a concrete drill bit of the correct diameter.

Watch out for pipes and cables!

If you do not know where electrical cables, water pipes or concrete reinforcement are located in the wall, finding out is extremely important. Drilling into one of these services could, in the worst case, mean opening up the entire wall to repair the damage. A cable and pipe detector helps identify where you should and should not drill into concrete. Take care: plastic pipes often cannot be detected.

Use a depth stop

The drill hole must be exactly the right depth. If it is too deep or too shallow, the screw will not have the grip it needs. A depth stop helps you drill to precisely the right depth.

Remove debris

After drilling, the hole is full of debris. It is very important to remove the dust before inserting a wall plug.

Hiring a professional concrete drilling company

In some cases, it is better to leave concrete drilling to a specialist. You can often drill a small hole for a light or curtain fitting yourself. However, holes for pipework or to vent a kitchen extractor outdoors are work for a professional.

Professionals have the specialist tools and know exactly what to look out for. Particularly for a one-off job requiring several larger holes, hiring a professional may be cheaper than buying all the equipment yourself.

Costs per job

A tradesperson can drill holes for many different jobs. The price therefore depends on the type of work.

Having holes drilled by a professional

If you want an attractive cabinet on the wall or a new light beside your bed, a tradesperson can drill the holes for you. They ensure that everything is straight and level and bring the correct screws and wall plugs. Is it just one hole? The tradesperson may charge a call-out fee. If several holes need drilling, you will pay around 35 to 50 euros on average.

Drilling holes for a pipe, extractor hood or ventilation

The exact size of the required hole determines the price of the job. If extensive protection is needed indoors or the job involves other difficulties, the tradesperson may charge extra. The average cost of drilling a hole in concrete for an extractor hood or ventilation, for example, is €125 to €200.

The examples above are relatively small jobs. If you want an entire stairwell opening cut, for example, the cost will be considerably higher, with a bill of approximately 900 euros.
