Many people may be unfamiliar with the term, yet diamond drilling and carbide drilling are still widely used. You will probably be wondering where these methods are used. Diamond and carbide drill bits are used on many items you encounter every day, such as bathroom tiles or a natural stone worktop. We are happy to explain what to consider and what can happen if the wrong method is used. Of course, you can also leave the drilling to a specialist company such as Sloop Concurrent.

Diamond drilling is mainly used when highly precise circular openings are required. Drilling holes accurate to the millimetre through concrete, asphalt, natural stone or other hard materials is particularly common in housebuilding, although we can of course help in other settings too. Diamond drilling is also frequently used in demolition, where holes are drilled as part of the work and the demolition process.

Whether you need holes for a drainage system, drilling for asphalt and concrete testing, holes for chemical anchors or ventilation openings, Sloop Concurrent is happy to help. We do so professionally and affordably. Naturally, we also hold all the necessary certificates, including those from SIKB.

Nationwide demolition company coverage

Diamond drilling: dry or wet?

You have had a completely new bathroom installed and still need to hang its accessories. Naturally, you cannot do this with an ordinary drill; you need a diamond drill bit. Diamond drilling can be carried out in two ways: dry or wet, in other words without or with water cooling. What is the difference? Dry drilling is the choice when you want to work quickly, and it is also more convenient for harder types of tile. Wet drilling is the option when you want to keep the work free of dust. The drilling residue is washed away immediately, and the drill bit is cooled at the same time, as its temperature can rise considerably at high speeds. This keeps the drilling equipment cool, so you do not have to worry about the bit overheating.

Wet diamond drilling

Wet diamond drilling

Advantages of wet drilling

One advantage of wet drilling is that the drill bit cannot overheat. Water cooling keeps the bit cool and also gives the tile drill bit a longer service life. Another benefit of wet drilling is that you must always use a drill guide. This allows you to drill even more accurately into tiles and reduces the chance of tiles breaking during drilling. Finally, drilling often produces a great deal of debris. With wet drilling, this is washed away immediately, keeping the work area neat and clean.

Drawbacks of wet drilling

Wet drilling really has only one drawback: the surrounding area can become wet. If Sloop-Concurrent carries out wet drilling on your premises, we always make sure the area is properly covered. This prevents damage to belongings and avoids unnecessary costs.

Dry diamond drilling

Benefits of dry drilling

What is a drawback of wet drilling is a welcome advantage of dry drilling. There is no need to cover the work area with protective materials because dry drilling releases no water. Dry drilling also allows you to work much faster. For example, if you want to fix tiles with adhesive immediately after drilling, that is no problem. With wet drilling, it is a problem because the surface must always be dry when adhesive is applied. Another benefit of dry drilling is that no external cooling is needed. Small dry drill bits usually have a wax filling that keeps the bit properly cooled.

Disadvantages of dry drilling

Dry drilling also has few drawbacks. The only disadvantage Sloop Concurrent can identify is that it produces a lot of drilling debris. This means you must always use a vacuum cleaner while drilling a hole. That way, you keep the workplace clean and finish the job quickly.

Diamond drilling yourself

Before you start drilling, you need to know how large the hole should be. A 6mm hole, for example, is ideal for hanging bathroom accessories. If you need to install a complete waste pipe, however, you will need at least a 43mm drill bit. These are standard sizes, but your waste pipe or bathroom accessories may differ, so check the dimensions carefully before drilling into your wall or tiles. If DIY is not your strong point, this is not an easy job. That is why we always recommend hiring a professional for diamond drilling or drilling metal. If you still want to try it yourself, we recommend using a drill guide. This keeps the drill in position and prevents you from making several holes in a wall, worktop or tile. A drill guide should always be used for wet drilling.

Need professional drilling using diamond and/or tungsten carbide bits?

This drilling method is not suitable for a beginner, so we always recommend having it carried out by a professional. Sloop Concurrent has worked in the trade for many years and knows every aspect of this method. We are also happy to take on bespoke jobs, so you will not be left disappointed. If you have any further questions about this drilling method, please feel free to contact us!

Accredited and certified for concrete drilling

To give you a clear picture of how we work, we would like to explain what you can expect from us. Customers usually first contact us with a question or to request a quotation. In both cases, Sloop Concurrent aims to speak to you and respond to your question or quotation request within 24 hours. Sometimes a demolition project involves bespoke work, in which case we first arrange a site visit. This allows us to account for any additional costs so you know exactly where you stand. Once you accept the quotation, we immediately arrange a date to drill the holes. We can then make sure all the equipment needed to complete your job is available on the agreed date. Once the job has been completed within the agreed time, we make sure all the released materials and drilling debris are cleared up and the site is left clean and tidy. We take the materials away and dispose of them at the designated disposal facility. This also helps us do our bit for the environment. Once you approve the finished result, we send the invoice and ask you to leave a review on our website. This helps us improve our service and encourages other customers to choose Sloop Concurrent. Of course, we hope you have had a positive experience with our service and that we will meet again for another demolition project in the future.

Sloop Concurrent: certifications and insurance

When you ask Sloop Concurrent to carry out your demolition work, you can look forward to a pleasant working relationship. Sloop Concurrent is well insured. We hold CAR insurance, or Construction All Risks insurance, covering material damage arising during the construction or installation of buildings, roads, bridges and systems. We have never had to make a claim on this insurance, but we prefer to be on the safe side.

Sloop Concurrent is also an accredited training company, training the skilled tradespeople of the future. All our demolition workers are trained in-house, and we do not subcontract our work. This is reflected both in the total cost and in the final result.

Asbestos must always be considered when demolishing structures. We therefore hold dNAA certification, which allows us to remove asbestos. We do so safely and responsibly.
