Demolishing a concrete bathroom floor

In what circumstances does a bathroom need to be stripped out?

There are several reasons why you might want your bathroom demolished. In most cases, the bathroom is outdated and simply needs renovating. You may be tired of your old bathroom, or moving into a home where the previous owners had different tastes. Bathrooms also frequently suffer from leaks that cause tiles to come away from the wall. In that situation, you may choose to have the whole bathroom stripped out. Bathroom demolition involves a great deal, so it is important to do it correctly. Careless demolition risks causing unnecessary damage.

Demolish your bathroom yourself or hire an accredited demolition company?

Stripping out a bathroom sounds simple: swing a sledgehammer, remove the rubble and start fitting it out! Unfortunately, bathroom demolition is much more complex than it appears. You need to understand plumbing and electrics and, of course, have the right tools. Although it can be tempting to take a sledgehammer to that porcelain toilet, flying fragments can create dangerous situations or damage parts of the walls or floor.

If you are good at DIY and have demolition experience, you can strip out the bathroom yourself and save money. If you have never done demolition work, lack the right tools or do not understand plumbing and electrics, it is better to leave the bathroom strip-out to a qualified demolition company. You can expect the following benefits:

  • A 100% professional result.
  • Work is carried out safely with the right tools.
  • Your bathroom demolished within one working day.
  • Rubble is removed neatly, leaving a clean and tidy space.

Step-by-step bathroom demolition guide

Wondering what is involved in demolishing a bathroom? Below, we show how we work. This step-by-step guide can also serve as a checklist if you are demolishing your bathroom yourself.

Bathroom demolition step by step

  • Turn off the water. When stripping out a bathroom, pipes are likely to become exposed or need moving. Avoid getting soaked by turning off the water at the meter beforehand.
Tip: Fill a bucket with water so you can still flush the toilet, and fill enough bottles for drinking and washing your hands.
  • Switch off the electricity on the floor where the bathroom is located to prevent short circuits during demolition. You can power a work light or tools from downstairs using an extension reel.
  • Removing the toilet: turn off the cistern's isolation valve, undo the bolts securing the toilet to the floor, and remove the toilet pan and sealant. Remember to seal off the waste pipe as well.
  • Removing a washbasin: we disconnect the water pipes, seal the drain, undo the basin bolts and cut through the sealant. We then carefully lift the basin from the wall.
  • Removing a shower: cut through the sealant around the shower tray, dismantle the glass or plastic shower screens, unscrew the drain fitting and remove all loose parts. Remove the tray and pull the hose or PVC pipe out of the waste connection. Cover the drain to prevent rubble falling into it during demolition. Finally, remove the tap and cap the pipes.
  • Removing the bath: cut through the sealant around the bath, dismantle any glass or plastic screens, disconnect the trap underneath and remove any taps attached to the bath. Next, unscrew the waste fitting and remove all loose parts. Pull the bath towards you and pull the hose or PVC pipe out of the drain. Cover the drain to prevent rubble falling into it during demolition. Finally, remove the tap and cap off the pipes.
  • Removing radiators: disconnect the boiler's power supply and drain the radiator using its valve. A radiator often contains more than a bucketful of water, so stay with it. Undo the quick-release coupling and wall brackets, holding the radiator securely as you dismantle it. Even an empty radiator is very heavy! Once it is removed, use end caps to seal the heating pipes.
  • Electricity and lights: remove lights from the ceiling and the faceplates from sockets. Cap the electrical wires using wire connectors or terminal blocks.

Bathroom demolition tips

  • Do not forget to turn off the water before starting demolition.
  • Leave the taps open to allow the remaining water in the pipes to drain away.
  • Switch off the electricity. Otherwise, dangerous situations can arise.
  • Make sure you have suitable tools.
  • Always wear protective clothing, gloves, safety goggles and a dust mask.
  • To keep the work reasonably clean, hang plastic sheeting across the bathroom doorway.
  • Removing rubble? Protect the floor!

Stripping out a bathroom and installing a new one

Would you like your old bathroom demolished and your new one installed straight away? We can do that! Sloop-Concurrent offers both bathroom demolition and installation. Our skilled installers fit your bathroom with the utmost precision and finish it neatly for you.

Where necessary, we relocate pipes and electrics or install underfloor heating. Whatever your requirements, contact us without obligation to discuss prices and options.

Demolishing a bathroom floor

Do your bathroom tiles need replacing, or would you like to strip out the entire bathroom? We remove bathroom floors expertly. Most bathroom floors consist of ceramic tiles or quarry tiles, which we remove with a hammer and chisel. Are the tiles firmly fixed? We may need to use an electric demolition hammer to break them up. We also use a demolition hammer when removing or breaking open a concrete floor.

Removing bathroom tiles

If bathroom wall tiles are easy to remove, we use a hammer and chisel. If they are firmly bonded to the adhesive, our demolition team uses a demolition hammer to vibrate them loose.

Removing bathroom tiles leaves uneven areas and sometimes holes in the wall. The wall will always need to be levelled or plastered afterwards, even if you intend to fit new tiles. We can also take care of plastering. We are your all-in-one solution for bathroom demolition and renovation.

Bathroom renovation without demolition

Would you like to renovate your bathroom but dread demolition work in your home? We can renovate your bathroom without demolition. Options include:

  • Applying a concrete or béton ciré layer over your existing tiles.
  • Installing new bathroom furniture or fitting a new surround around your existing bathroom unit.
  • Installing new taps and accessories.

The bathroom demolition process by Sloop Concurrent, step by step

If you would prefer to leave the demolition to someone else and be sure everything runs smoothly, you can hire Sloop-Concurrent. Bathroom demolition by a certified company such as Sloop-Concurrent follows an established process with these steps:

  • Our professional demolition service has caught your interest, and you are convinced by our low price for top-quality service.
  • The next step is for us to contact you, review all the documents and inspect the demolition site. This gives us a clearer picture of the substances we will encounter and the amount and type of demolition waste that will be produced.
  • A professional demolition plan is then drawn up. It describes how we can safely separate and dispose of the materials released in an environmentally responsible way. It also sets out various safety measures. Finally, we record your requirements systematically.
  • Once the demolition plan is complete, we begin the bathroom strip-out. The demolition work is carried out by professional staff specialising in safe and environmentally responsible demolition.
  • If you wish, the demolition materials can be handed over to you instead of taken to an authorised disposal site. This can be arranged by agreement.

Frequently asked questions

You now know much more about bathroom demolition. To answer any questions you may still have, read our frequently asked questions and answers below:

The time required depends on the scale of the work, tile and floor layers, access and waste removal. Disconnecting services and any unexpected materials also affect the schedule. We agree the duration for your bathroom in advance; one working day is not a general guarantee.

Floor area is only one factor affecting the price. What needs to be retained, the floor build-up, pipes and cables, and the rubble removal route also matter. Get an up-to-date quotation specifying what will be removed and the condition in which the space will be handed over.

This can be included in the enquiry. First establish whether the wall has a structural role and which pipes and cables it contains. A load-bearing wall requires structural preparation and any necessary consent.

Discuss beforehand which pipes will be shut off or capped and who will do this. Record responsibility for water and electrical services in the work order so that the next installer knows how the room has been left.

Yes. Tell us which floor layers need removing when you enquire. If there is underfloor heating, we must first assess what can be retained. Preservation cannot be guaranteed without investigation.

Removing wall tiles can be included in the work. Specify whether only the tiles or the underlying layers must also be removed. Agree with the next tradesperson how flat and clean the substrate needs to be at handover.

Preparing your bathroom for demolition

What should I arrange before the demolition workers arrive?

Clear the bathroom and the agreed access route. Agree who will safely isolate the water and electricity, where rubble will be collected and what will be kept. Arrange an alternative shower or toilet temporarily if needed.

What happens if suspect material is found during demolition?

Stop work on that material and discuss a specialist investigation. Unidentified flooring or sheet materials in older homes may need particular attention. Do not break suspect material open further to examine it.

AI illustration in twelve numbered scenes: bathroom demolition, from preparation and investigation to professional execution and handover.
  1. Discuss the new bathroom

You compare the new bathroom's design and schedule with the existing space.

  2. Specify what to retain and remove

Sanitary fittings, tiling, floor layers and any elements to be retained are specified separately.

  3. Having building services made safe

The relevant tradesperson arranges the necessary isolation and protection of water, electricity and other services.

  4. Assessing unknown materials

If there is uncertainty about materials or the substrate, an investigation is arranged first. Do not break materials yourself to take samples.

  5. Protecting the route

Floors, doors and the waste removal route are protected in line with the agreed approach.

  6. Securing the work area

Dust controls and separation from occupied rooms are put in place. Access is by agreement only.

  7. Remove disconnected components

The team removes the agreed sanitary fittings and sets aside materials to be retained.

  8. Removing finishes in a controlled way

The agreed tiles and layers are removed using an appropriate method with dust control.

  9. Collecting and removing waste

Waste streams are separated as agreed and taken out of the building along the planned route.

  10. Assessing the substrate

Newly visible defects or discrepancies are discussed before repairs or subsequent work.

  11. Checking the work boundaries

Together, you check what has been removed and cleaned and what still needs to be done by the finishing contractor.

  12. Handing over to the installer

The cleared space, points requiring attention and follow-up arrangements are handed over to the party building the new bathroom.

This information is for clients. The professionals involved adapt the work and safety measures to the property. Do not work on load-bearing elements, unidentified services or materials suspected of containing asbestos yourself.
